I have truly enjoyed it. A big thanks to FRL, the staff development group and to Sarah for allowing all of us to explore these “Things” and have a better understanding of the web. I think this is a great way to train staff and look forward to any additional followups.
I really like Flickr and plan on doing more with my photography there. Good Reads and Shelfari are both good resources. I like the way you can rate and review the books you have read and see what others say about them. This would, I think, be an excellent way to display the new book sections in the Library.
YouTube has been somewhat of a surprise. I like the way Jeff put the music programs on for Marianna Black.
Google Docs would be a favorite. To be able to create online documents and have several staff members work together but from different libraries could save so much time and travel expense.

Wikipedia is an easy way way to find the meaning of something instead of searching through dictionaries or an encyclopedia.
All of these “22 Things” are definitely the way of the future. They are great opportunities for the libraries to communicate with patrons and the community as a group. After all, we are the first place that many people connect to the web.
So, all of these resources must make life easier. Right? And it does. I now feel more confident of my abilities to help patrons with any questions they might have on these areas. This is not the end-- just the beginning.
I still prefer to sit in my yard, relaxing and watching a smoky mountain sunset while reading the latest novel to downloading it from Netlibrary and plugging my ears and not hearing the sounds of the great outdoors.

North Carolina READ page

http://thereadonwnc.ning.com/
This site has some great information. Radio file is not as large as CD and will download quicker. You have several different ways to listen to the audiobook--from Microsoft windows Media Player to Mac. Several different languages are available.

If you don't have a device for bookmarking you will need to make notes of hour and minutes to fast forward when you continue.

Once you've obtained a license and opened the eAudiobook, you can't move the eAudiobook to another player.

All of this is free with an account and there are no overdues. All the "funnies" get boring very quickly. YouTube, I think, can be educational but it too can be like a comic strip. They are all so much alike!
I had viewed Cookie Monster in the Library and several other library related ones.

I chose this subject because it is here in own backyard. And such a beauty. The music is not bad either.

I liked the local variety in the video that appeals not only to me but to all the others that visit or would like to visit the area.

Library websites: A variety clip of this nature could be made of all the library buildings, inside spots and the local area for each. Vistors could then access this from the home page and recognize the area upon arrival.

Thing # 21

Podcasting:

Check out this new gadget...

http://www.podcastingnews.com/2008/06/04/build-a-set-top-box-out-of-an-altoid-tin-with-ybox/

And also this Charlotte Mecklenberg page:

http://www.libraryloft.org/podcasts.asp

I generally just typed in podcast or library podcast in Google and search the links.

I like the news podcast. Each of us participated in adding our comments and it worked for us.
I think this could be used in many different groups in the library system.

Here is a very quickly put together presentation. I have invited the Marianna Black Library team to join me.
Imagine what you could really do!
Anyone from students to patrons to staff could benefit from having this available to them. A group or class can communicate efficiently to create a presentation for a meeting or assignment.

When I tried to invite members to participate the email (presentation) did not go to them. Everyone on a team/committee can read, add, modify and change assignments anytime. Even at their own library.
-This could save alot of time traveling to attend meeting and workshops.
-One thing to beware of--deletion of other members work.
-I can see the usefulness of a Wiki for tutorials. As we advance to holds being placed outside the libraries we could have "help courses" for this and online catalog and account access information readily available for patrons. They could also participate. Thanks Sarah-I'm still pondering on this.
What does the 2.0 movement mean to me? Since starting the 23 Steps I have definitely explored many websites and accessed the internet more than I ever thought I would. Google Books, Delicious, Flickr, RSS, Image makers, Blogs, etc. are sites I now know "something" about. I might even be able to talk to patrons about them. What a concept!
Strength: I think the lifetime learning has allowed all of us the opportunity to learn new technologies that we may not have had the chance to otherwise. And the time on the job to do it. The more we know about technology the more we are able to communicate with our patrons.
Weakness: Library 2.0 could move at such a rapid pace that we lose track of what the patron wants and needs are and instead we focus on being a library that's on top of "social networking".

What can we do to move in this direction to make things easier and more usable for our patrons? I liked what Meredith Wolfwater said in "The essence of Library 2.0" :
Listen to our patrons and members of the community who don't use the library. Get to know them and what they want and need from the library. Whether it is what we offer now or if they want all the new technology. Then work toward that goal-after all they are why we have Libraries. I think it all comes back to customer service.

Thing : 14

Google Books :
I looked up books on grafting since a patron had requested material on this subject.
I found several and looked in the table of contents for subjects.
I was very impressed with Art of Grafting and Budding by Charle Baltet--copyright 1885. Of course all the pages were not there but to be able to view a book that old is awesome.

This is a very good way to find information if you don't have it available in the Library. You can go directly to the contents and scroll to the pages you need. And the more ways we have to find information for the patrons is always a plus.

I could even enter an ISBN in the search field.

Copyright--I can foresee a problem but how would it ever be controlled when it is wide open to the world? One book I looked at did have the words Copyright embedded in the print on every other page. This should help when printing.

I wouldn't use this site to read an entire book (unless it was very rare and the only way to have it) but for subject material it could be very good. I thought I would have little use for it. I see so many patrons, especially retired teachers, come in the library with their "little book of list". All the books they have read with a mark beside them-good or bad. This is not something I thought I would ever do and probably won't. But Goodreads is different! Have you ever heard someone say, "I read this really terrific book but I can't remember the title or author. Can you tell me what I checked out last month?" This would be the perfect solution for them. And it is so easy and takes such a minimal amount of time.

my 'read' shelf:

Thing 7, 8, 9

This is My town

http://www.flickr.com/map?place_id=sLG.0MObApvQf.eQ

I have explored around in several Flickr sites and found Interestingness--interesting. It has a huge amount of information you can have at your fingertips.

I still like surfing the net of my favorite pages and looking for the RSS sign and marking the feeds then. You see them everywhere...

My favorite feed at the moment is for all the FRL folder. This is absolutely the best way to view what our coworkers are finding and adding to their blog pages.

I haven't really viewed a weird one. Matter of taste?

I also have noticed how other Libraries are using blogs. For instance one has all their programs (by date) for each branch library on a blog. This gives a patron all the information at once instead of surfing back and forth on each Libraries homepage.

Wouldn't that be great?

I'm not really fond of technorati (yet) but this video did catch my eye:

http://technorati.com/videos/youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DZJlkplvYdgA

More on Thing 5

RSS
I have added all the FRLearners (at this time) blogs to my Google Reader. MBL Note: Tony Tallent

LibraryCrunch
Service for the Next Generation Library - A Library 2.0 Perspective by Michael Casey
Free Use Photos
by Michael Casey on April 19, 2008
Lori Reed and Tony Tallent have started a very cool group on Flickr called Free Use Photos:
Free Use Photos is a group where members can share photos that can be used without any copyright restrictions.
These pictures can be used however you would like. No attribution is necessary. All images are free.
Use them in your displays, presentations, publications or anywhere else.
Freedom to use. Freedom to read. Freedom to know. Freedom to share.
The idea is simple. Any photos placed in that group may be used by anyone for any purpose. What a great idea!
And now we have to get Flickr to create a copyright selection that can reflect this freedom. The LOC Flickr page (part of Flickr’s The Commons) is able to use a “no known copyright restrictions” label, but that label is reserved for participating museums and libraries and not exactly what we need for the group. What we need for the new Free Use Photos group is a public domain label. Unfortunately, Flickr’s most liberal license is the Creative Commons Attribution license, which is a start but doesn’t fit the needs of the group.
Robert Scoble recently dropped a lot of his photos into the public domain:
One advantage of putting all my photos into the public domain? People are now uploading them to Wikipedia. Like this entry for AT&T’s CEO. All my photos are in the public domain now. You can use them without even attributing them, or giving me credit (although I do appreciate those of you who give credit for my work). Why do I do that? Because sharing my work with the world has brought me back so much goodness. This is also a gift to the world from Fast Company Magazine, which paid my travel expenses to go to Davos.
But what we need is for Flickr to create a license that reflects the public domain status of the images so that we can avoid any confusion over licensing. Anyone have any ideas

Summer fun

<img height="235" alt="Yahoo! Tomorrow is not promised so I take one day at a time. Photography (as you will probably see) is something I really enjoy. I like to see what is around the corner each day and go with it. If I have a commissioned piece of art I definitely finish it promptly. Deadlines are stressful and that takes you to "Habit 71/2". Sometimes I have to be reminded to play and relax.

Habit #2 : Accept responsibility for your own learning.
I accept responsibilty for myself. No one else can "learn" for you. Being a very independent person I like to solve problems for myself but when I need help I also know I can find it in a book, internet, or by asking a friend or coworker for help. On the other hand I also like to help others when they have a question.

When you stop learning you stop growing.

Thing 1-4

Thing 1 & 2 :
Introduction-I read about the Blog and watched the tutorial. I have now shook hands with Thing 1 and Thing 2. I will be considering the 71/2 habits and be back to blog about them.

Thing 3:

What am I doing here? Blogging for the Library . A new experience for me. The internet doesn't have alot of interest for me. Just give me the great outdoors--camera, fishing pole or a walking stick and I'm as happy as a fish in water.
But I do love my job and already I can see this will be an interesting assignment. This group of team players will be awesome with the 71/2 habits of life long learners.

Thing 4:
I will email Sarah and register this blog.
